What Is Cantilever Harvester?
A cantilever harvester is a mechanical structure designed to convert ambient vibrations into electrical energy using a clamped-free beam configuration. One end of the beam is rigidly fixed while the other end remains free to move, allowing the structure to bend when exposed to periodic motion or environmental vibrations. This bending motion creates mechanical strain along the beam.
In many designs, a piezoelectric material layer is attached to the beam so that bending produces an electrical voltage. When the structure vibrates near its resonance frequency, the bending amplitude increases and the electrical output becomes significantly stronger. This simple geometry allows small mechanical oscillations to be converted into useful electrical signals.
In systems such as vibration-based piezoelectric energy harvesting architectures, cantilever harvesters capture energy from machinery vibrations, structural movement, or human activity.
Example:
A small cantilever harvester attached to a vibrating motor housing can generate electrical pulses each time the beam flexes during oscillation.
